Sharing a Strap Pattern

This is a recent piece, woven in the Baltic/Speckled pickup technique. My friend bought it for her ukulele and I'm delighted! It's 2" wide, woven with Omega Sinfonia cotton in 5 colors. I didn't double the pattern threads as is often suggested in Baltic pickup. I quite often use the technique in ways that don't fit within tradition from the Baltic region, or elsewhere in the world. This is an original design.

The pattern itself is not too complicated. It is made up of repeating diamonds with some <'s at the sides.

Here are my thoughts on two things that make it unusual.
The first is the choice of colors. This is a combination that I love- using bright colors against a black background. They are not traditional for Baltic designs, but they strongly convey my personal aesthetic. Rust and turquoise are two of my favorite colors!
The second thing is that more threads are dropped than picked up.  The black background and weft combine to create negative-space diamonds in black.  These black areas create frames for diamonds made up of the brightly colored speckles. Rather than picking up all of the colors to create the diamonds in warp floats, I allowed the natural speckles to create the design.  The black diamonds surround and highlight the speckles that naturally form in the plain weave.

Below is the warping chart/pattern chart for this design. It was created with this free online tool: https://www.raktres.net/seizenn/#/inkle

I saved it so it can be accessed there by anyone using this link:
